He graduated from Elyria High School prior to enlisting in the United States Army. William served overseas in the Pacific Theater on several islands as a cook. He earned an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Shortly after the service, William moved to Kingsley, Iowa and married Pearl Ella Taylor on April 2, 1946 at the Congregational Church.

William also helped in the construction of silos with Hanson Silo – Iowa Inc. In 1966, the Linden’s called Moville their home. William took some welding classes and took a position with Missouri Valley Steel in Sioux City. He welded there until 1983 when he retired.

In his spare time, William enjoyed traveling with Pearl. Their most memorable trip was to the state of Alaska. He created numerous craft projects from wood that he shared with others. William liked to garden and was known for his front yard blanketed with Phlox. He played the Mandolin, had a love for country western music and never missed an episode of Lawrence Welk.
