Joseph D. Lewis, 73, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Ft. Dodge. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Deacon Rick Roder will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Burial will follow at a later date. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Joseph Delbert Lewis was born on September 22, 1942 in Le Mars, Iowa to Joseph and Neva (Hoffman) Lewis. He graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1960. He joined the Air Force in 1962 and later the Iowa Air National Guard. He was happily married to Shirley (Colling) Lewis on February 23, 1963. For many years, Joseph enjoyed taking photos for the Le Mars Daily Sentinel and later was the circulation manager for the Fort Dodge Messenger. He then became dispatcher for the Illinois Central Railroad and built pallets for Taslers Inc. Joe retired in 2007. He could be found organizing coupons, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and enjoying the company of his grandchildren. Joe was an active member of Holy Trinity Parish of Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Survivors include his children, Scott and Jolynn Lewis of Remsen, Iowa; Jeff and Kathy Lewis of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Jody and Jennifer Lewis also Fort Dodge, Iowa. Brothers, Jerry Lewis of Le Mars, Iowa; Larry and Patricia Lewis of Spencer, Iowa; sisters, Joan Feller of Rapids City, South Dakota, Geraldine and Carl Palsrock of Sibley, Iowa and Mary and Lon Deboer of Brunsville, Iowa; eight grandchildren; Joshua, Samantha, Sadie, Jeremiah, Sydney, Amanda, Jody Lewis Jr. and step-grandchild,Gabe Cunningham Lewis; one great grandchild,Audrey June.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Neva; sister, Rosalie, brother-in-law, Jay Feller, sister-in-law, Paulette Lewis, and mother and father-in law, Ray and Ruth Colling.
