Obituary

Sergeant John Runcie (L4R), 78, of Le Mars, Iowa, died Monday, November 10, 2025, at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke's-Downtown, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at the Le Mars Bible Church in Le Mars. Pastor Fred Gums and Pastor Mike Hulinsky will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. and following the services during a time of lunch and fellowship, all at the church. Arrangements are with the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com .

In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials can be made to the Le Mars Bible Church and the Le Mars Senior Center.

John William Runcie, the son of James and Mary Gay Runcie, was born on December 5, 1946, in Le Mars, Iowa. He attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Community High School.

Following his schooling, he worked various jobs in Le Mars before he found his calling to law enforcement. He attended the academy in Iowa. On June 24, 1968, he joined the Le Mars Police Department. He retired as a Sergeant in August of 2002 after 34 years of service. Le Mars was his home his whole life, something he was proud of. After retirement, he spent many summers manning the green waste site for the City of Le Mars.

He was a member of the Le Mars Bible Church and the Le Mars Senior Center. He enjoyed attending the Plymouth County Fair and taking trips to the Black Hills to try his luck at panning for gold. He also enjoyed doing woodworking.

Survivors include his son, Shawn (Lakin) Runcie of Remsen, IA; his brother, James (Evelyn) Runcie; his nieces and nephews: Nonnie (Melissa) Veeder, Cassandra (Tim) Hoffard, Parris (Jackie) Veeder, Troy Veeder, Rick (Kelly) Culler, Wendy Wimberly, and Kirsten (Wayne) McLaughlin; and several great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings: Joann (Rich) Culler and Nancy Jean Veeder.
