Ronald Clarence Harnack Sr, 93, of Remsen, Iowa, was called home to his Lord on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Accura Healthcare in Pomeroy, Iowa.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 19, 2025, at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Reverend Matthew Martin from Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will at the Remsen Community Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time and following the service during a time of lunch and fellowship, all at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com .
Pallbearers are Elizabeth (Harnack) Kirk, Nikolas Harnack, Lindsey (Harnack) Steinberg, Trevor Harnack, Jake Steinberg, Jesse Kirk, Frank Harvey. Honorary pallbearers are Kelly Merchant, Bobby Merchant, and American Legion Members.
Mr. Harnack was born on May 28, 1932, on the family farmhouse near Remsen, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Alma (Krekow) Harnack. He started his life on the farm near Remsen. He was baptized, confirmed, and married in 1960 at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. He graduated from Remsen High School in 1949. He played basketball all four years of high school as was the salutatorian of his class.
He married Mary Ann Frieda Merchant on July 16, 1960. The couple lived on the Harnack Century Family Farm near Remsen for over 50 years. Mary passed away on January 5, 2013, at the farmhouse.
He was a lifetime farmer his entire career at the family farm except for his military days. He was drafted in the United States Army and served for two years during the Korean War era. He attained the rank of private first class E3.
In addition to farming, he worked as a substitute rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Granville, Iowa, for over 20 years. He was a Remsen Township trustee and served on the Plymouth County Committee at the A.S.C. office.
He was a member of Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars and the Korean War Last Man's Club. He was also a lifetime member of Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. He served as A.A.L. President and played in dart tournaments at this church. He loved attending church services, even in his nursing home days. He enjoyed collecting and showing his Lionel trains at museums. He also had a Lionel train layout in his assisted living days. He also enjoyed collecting farm toys, especially International Harvester and Farmall.
Survivors include his son, Ronald Clarence Harnack Jr and his wife, Julie of Palmer, IA; a daughter, Kitty Jo Mary (Harnack) Edgar and her husband Keith of Belleville, IL; grandchildren: Elizabeth Grace (Harnack) Kirk and her husband Jesse, Nikolas Alexander Harnack, Lindsey Marie (Harnack) Steinberg and her husband Jake, and Trevor Clarence Harnack; 4 great grandchildren: Benjamin Steinberg, Georgia Kirk, Ralph Kirk, and Adrian Steinberg; a sister, Sharon Harvey; brothers-in-law, Kelly Merchant and Bobby Merchant and his wife Sue; sister-in-law, Lynn Merchant; Godchildren; Frank Harvey, Heather Merchant, and Kirk Hansen; and many nieces and nephews who knew him as "Uncle Ron".
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Frieda (Merchant) Harnack; his parents, Clarence J. Harnack and Alma W. (Krekow) Harnack; in-laws; John A. and Anna Evalina Martha (Schenzel) Merchant, sister-in-law; Clara (Merchant) Karras and her husband Howard, Pam Merchant, wife of Kelly Merchant, brother-in-law; Dean Harvey, Charles Merchant and his wife Ernie, Douglas Merchant and his wife Karilyn, Carl Merchant, Eugene Merchant and his wife Norma, John Merchant and his wife Elaine, Franklin Merchant and his wife Rena, and Erick Oscar; half-sister-in-law; Juanita Walters; half-brother-in-law; B.J. Merchant; and God child; Allen Harvey.
The family of Ronald Harnack Sr. would like to thank the staff at the Accura Healthcare in Pomeroy, Iowa for their wonderful care. They would also like to thank his sister, Sharon, for the many visits to see Ron.
