He was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He served his country while stationed in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict. Following his discharge in 1968, he lived in Sioux City, where he worked for Cloverleaf Cold Storage.

He worked for them for over 25 years, until his retirement. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for them for 5 years. In 2016, they moved to Le Mars.
Over the years, Rod enjoyed camping and fishing. They camped many nights at Browns Lake in Woodbury County. He enjoyed making and selling steel grills for fire pits. Whenever he met a fellow veteran who wanted one, he sold to them for half price. He also enjoyed tinkering with small engines, cars, and tractors. He had a soft heart for animals, many of which became pets.
