Myron Warren DeYoung, 70, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Craig, passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2025.
DeYoung, a devoted husband, father, brother, Peepaw and friend, died with his with Heidi by his side and surrounded by family and loved ones after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.
A celebration of life will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Family and friends will gather to remember a man whose life was full of hard work, big love and unwavering spirit.
Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through the funeral home.
Myron was born in Hawarden, on Jan. 7, 1955, the son of Joseph (Joe) and Charlotte (Sorgdrager) DeYoung. When Myron was two years old, his family moved to Long Beach, CA, where they resided until 1974. While there, Myron attended school at David Starr Jordan High School. In 1974, the DeYoung's moved back to Iowa.
Myron was one of eight children and carried the strength, honor and heart of the Midwest with him throughout his life. Myron had a deep love for the simple joys in life like when he cheered for his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers, went to concerts, fished, hunted, gathered with family or the way he would strike up a meaningful conversation. He would especially light up whenever his daughter walked into the room always greeting her with his trademark warmth and a joyful "hello daughter." His stories, laughter and strong presence left a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to know him.
Myron spent most of his career as a dedicated millwright in Phoenix, AZ, and Alaska known for his skill in welding and for traveling across the country working on various industrial projects. Myron also proudly attended United Brotherhood of Carpenters Education, Victor Valley Jr. College in Victorville, CA, and training schools all over America, constantly sharpening his craft and mentoring others along the way.
Myron had a big heart, he was kind, loving, always ready to help anyone and he never knew a stranger. Myron loved to visit and always wanted to know how your day was going. Myron loved all his nieces and nephews, always having to know what they were doing in their life. Myron was very proud of each one of them. He had a special place in his heart for three nephews, Greg Smithson, Dennis DeYoung and Austin Gazafy, or "Austin Powers" as he called him. Myron was very proud of his niece Jocelyn Vlotho whom he loved to hear play the piano.
Myron is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Heidi DeYoung; son, Tyson (Marissa) DeYoung, grandson, Trevor DeYoung; daughter, Alysia (Dustin) Chism and grandchildren, Anton (Desirae) Chism and Amaya Chism; stepdaughter, Meagan and her three children, Coben, Izabella and Kiana, who also lovingly called Myron "Peepaw." Myron is also survived by his sisters, Sandra (Steve) Phelps, Marshalltown, IA, Nancy (George) Smithson, Le Mars and Janet (Jay) Vlotho, Ireton; a brother, Richard DeYoung of Craig; and many nieces and nephews who will miss his warmth, wit and genuine heart.
We take comfort in knowing Myron is reunited with the following whom preceded him in death, his parents, Joseph "Joe" (Charlotte) Sorgdrager DeYoung; brothers, Joey De Young, Milo DeYoung, Vernon DeYoung; a sister-in-law, Pam DeYoung; as well as many dear loved ones and friends who went before him.
Myron may be gone from our sight but never from our hearts. As we like to, he's walking with God with both legs in Heaven now.
