Mildred was born November 24, 1920 near Battle Creek, Iowa to John and Christine (Peterson) Manson. She attended school in Battle Creek and Kingsley before her family moved to Plymouth County to become proprietors of the Union Center Country Store in Union Township. She graduated from Union Township Consolidated School in 1938.
After earning a teaching degree from Westmar College, she taught at country schools in Plymouth County. Mildred enjoyed telling tales of her adventures in teaching—lugging water, stoking the wood stove, teaching kids to read. She married John Morton on August 16, 1943.
John and Mildred farmed in Union Township. For over 50 years Mildred served as the pianist for the Union Township Presbyterian Church. She loved music and accompanied John as soloist for many local events.
Besides music, Mildred loved serving people. Friends and family enjoyed coming to their farm home. She was a wonderful cook and hostess, a good listener and helped people feel they were important whether they spent a few minutes or a few hours with her.
Mildred is survived by her children Scott (Alma) Morton of Colorado Springs, Terry (Jane) Morton of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Reg (Jane) Morton of Baton Rouge and Jill (Fred) Board of Oakridge, Oregon. Mildred had 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 14 nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband John (2007), her parents John and Christine Manson, her brothers Johnny and Gene, and her sister Miriam.
