Mavis A. Johnson, 88, of Hartley, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 under Hospice care in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley, Iowa. Rev. Dave Ericksen will officiate. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the Hartley Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends. There will also be one hour of visitation on Monday at the church prior to the funeral service.
Mavis Arlene Johnson was born on November 8, 1930 on the family farm near Melvin, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Emma (Recher) Huck. She attended school in Melvin and graduated from Melvin High School in 1949. Following graduation, Mavis worked at a grocery store in Melvin and later as a telephone operator in Sibley, Iowa.
On October 13, 1951, Mavis and LeRoy "Tony" Johnson were united in marriage at the Lutheran church in Melvin. They lived for a brief time in Sibley before moving to the family farm south of Hartley. Along with raising her children, Mavis assisted Tony with farming and livestock.
Mavis was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. She taught Sunday School, participated in a bible study, Ladies' Aid, the Mary Circle and LWML. She was an avid flower gardener, Bridge player and golfer. At home she was known for her cooking, baking Danish pastries and sewing. Second to her faith was the love she had for her family. Mavis loved following her children's and grandchildren's activities. She looked forward to the annual Johnson campout which is in its 30th year.
Grateful to have shared her life is her children, Vicky Kilian of Sioux Falls, SD; Connie and Kent Thompson of Forest City, IA; Jerry and Dawn Johnson of Park Rapids, MN; Jay and Lisa Johnson of Hartley, IA and Amy and Brian Baier of Brandon, SD; 13 grandchildren, Katherine Kilian, Allison (Brian) Strommen, Brooke (Kyle) Dennis, Kelli Thompson, Jill (Mickey) Johnson, Jenni (Eric) Hosler, Jessi (Troy) Vankempen, Jason Johnson, Travis Johnson, Tim Johnson; Keith Johnson; Emma Baier and Brandon Baier; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Duane Johnson of Arnolds Park, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy "Tony" Johnson on April 13, 2014; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Torval and Helga Johnson; a son-in-law, Jim Kilian; sisters, Elaine Huck, Peggy and Howard Pyle, Betty and Lloyd Raveling, Mary Ann and Rex Petersen and Barbara and Bob Ostby; sisters-in-law, Doris Johnson and Nancy Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Gary Johnson.
