Matt was born on November 3, 1930, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of W.D. and Olga (Hansen) Walker. He attended schools in Sioux City, Iowa, Oregon, and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1949.
Matt was a First Class Seaman in the Naval reserves for two and a half years and a Sergeant First Class in the Iowa National Guard for four years.
Matt married Lois Braun on September 14, 1953, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was working for Nemmers Plumbing and Heating when he was electrocuted working at the "Old" Floyd Valley Hospital in the boiler room. The incident caused the loss of his left eye which ended his military service. Matt did not let this deter him. He and Lois started their own business of Walker's Ditching, Earthwork, and Construction. Along the way Matt and Lois had three more companies, Lo-Ma Concrete, L&M Sand and Gravel, and Walker's Excavating. Most of Matt's crews were high school and college students with a year around main stay crew.
There is hardly an area of Le Mars where Matt and his crews did not do some form of construction. You always knew who Matt was with his black patch and his khaki uniforms. Matt did not have any hobbies. Work was his hobby. That was when he was the happiest.
Matt was a former member of the Elks, Eagles Club, and the American Legion. He was current member of the Le Mars Knights of Columbus. Matt was giving with his time, money, and material. His favorite thing to do was give kids sand for their sand boxes. Oh and the stories he could tell. Never a dull moment.
He is survived by his children: Rod (Ann) Walker, Leann (Dean) Bohlken, and Kerri (Larry) Stinton; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 1 step grandchild; 2 step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, John and Helen (Groetken) Braun; his son, Randy Walker; his wife, Lois Walker; his siblings: Alma Roddy (Bernard Roddy, Norbert Mayer), Betty (John) Mitchell, Lucille (Ed) Parsons, and Mickey Walker; and in laws: John Braun, Joyce Braun, Bob (Shirley) Braun, and Helen (Ray) Clarey.
