Larry Freking was born on June 22, 1938 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Loretta (Holton) Freking. He was raised on the family farm outside of Oyens and graduated from Remsen St. Mary's High School in 1956.
On June 28, 1962, Larry and Karolyn Kummerfeld were united in marriage at Sutherland, Iowa. They made their life and home in Le Mars, where they raised two children, Judy and Steve. In addition to his family, Larry helped many people at work, at church and in his community. Throughout life, he was generous with his time, talent and treasure.
After a few years in the feed business, Larry began his insurance career in 1965 and founded Freking Brokerage in 1973. Larry won numerous sales and service awards while helping thousands and forging forever-friendships. He and his wife Karolyn also loved hosting and entertaining agents, employees, and friends at the office, at their home and at their cottage.
While Larry and Karolyn were fortunate to travel extensively, their favorite spot was on their deck overlooking Lake Okoboji. He and Karolyn spent countless days sharing the great view and good food with loved ones. Larry loved to play cards, sail, golf, and swim. His grandkids will always remember when he took each of them parasailing at the lake as well as spinning Grandpa's slot machine and stoking the fireplace every Christmas.
Larry is survived by his two children, daughter Judy Freking of Le Mars, IA; son Steve Freking and his wife Lauri of West Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren, Jordan, Solomon, Roman, Elijah, Virginia, Benjamin, Maya and Jack; two siblings, Jim (Sally) Freking, and Patricia Wurth; sister-in-law, Carol Freking; brothers-in-law, Dick (Gail) Kummerfeld, Chuck (Lila) Kummerfeld; and several nieces and nephews.
