Obituary

Obituary for John "Jack" Robert Pehler John R. "Jack" Pehler, 91, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at home following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Father Paul Eisele will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church.

John "Jack" Robert Pehler was born on October 4, 1922 in Le Mars, Iowa to George and Margaret (Streng) Pehler. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars and then took a position with Wind King in Merrill. On October 14, 1944, Jack enlisted in the Unites States Army Air Force. He served as a sergeant during WWII with the 3rd Photographic and Reconnaissance Squadron. Jack earned his Honorable Discharge on February 14, 1946.

When he returned from the war, Jack took a custodial position at St. Joseph (Gehlen) Catholic School. He worked there for 16 years before taking a job with the Iowa Department of Transportation. After 16 years with the D.O.T., Jack retired.

Jack was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. His faith was a very important part of his life and he recited the Rosary often. For many years he completed the daily crossword puzzle and enjoyed classical music. He enjoyed cooking, baking and fishing. Jack was the caretaker of the family and assisted his parents and siblings when their health began to fail. Very simply put, Jack enjoyed life.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sister and her husband, Mary Jane and Darrell Peterson of Le Mars, Iowa; two nieces, Ann (Larry) Luksan and Susan Peterson both of Le Mars, IA; great-nieces, Sara of Des Moines, IA and Angie and Amanda of Le Mars; and great-great-nephews, Devon, Austin, Ethan and Caiden; cousin Jim (Eileen) Mullin of Denison, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Allan, Max and James; and a nephew, Allan.
