Obituary for John Edwin Brangwin John E. Brangwin, 90, of Le Mars passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at his home. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow and Rev. Chris Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday. Pallbearers will be John's grandchildren.
John Edwin Brangwin was born on December 31, 1925 in Le Mars, Iowa to John H. and Mathilde L. (Becker) Brangwin. He attended Le Mars High School until John enlisted in the United States Navy on December 29, 1943. He proudly served his country during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He earned his honorable discharge on April 20, 1946 having attained the rank of Seaman First Class. Following the service, John graduated from high school in Des Moines, Iowa where he studied drafting. He returned to Le Mars and began a career in construction with local contractors. He assisted in the construction of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was one of the oldest members that was baptized, confirmed and married in the church.
On February 26, 1950 John and Virginia Downing were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church Le Mars. John built a portable roller skating rink and ran this business at various locations around the Midwest until it burnt down in 1953. He returned to Le Mars and worked in the construction business. In 1958, he formed his own business called Brangwin Construction. John was a general contractor who built numerous homes in Le Mars along with motels and apartment buildings in the area.
Along with being a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, John ushered for over 50 years and served on the church council. He was also a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion and had served as secretary/treasurer of the WWII Last Man's Club. John was a former member of the B.P.O.Elks.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Virginia of Le Mars; children and their spouses, Larry and Lisa Brangwin of Le Mars, IA, David and Tonia Brangwin of Palm Bay, FL and Janet and Mark Skidmore of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Sara (Anthony) Jones, Jason Brangwin, Shaun (Heather) Brangwin, Peter (Nicole) Brangwin, Kristine (Charles) Turner, Kevin Clayton and Kara Clayton; and twin brother, Joe S. Brangwin of Ridgecrest, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Don Brangwin of Seattle, WA and Earl Brangwin of Santa Ana , CA and sister, Velva Ford of Tempe, AZ .
