John
Baack
May 1, 1936 — Oct 25, 2025
John was born in Le Mars, Iowa, and grew up surrounded by family, farm fields, and the values that would guide him throughout his life—kindness, hard work, and genuine care for others.
He graduated from Le Mars High School in 1953, one of a class of 96, and soon after married his high school sweetheart, Alta Mae Siders. Together they built a life full of laughter and love, celebrating 58 wonderful years of marriage before Alta's passing in 2016.
John went on to study at Westmar College and earned his master's degree from the University of South Dakota. He began his career teaching English in Le Mars and Sioux Center and later became head of the English Department at Ellsworth College. In 1964, he joined Houghton Mifflin, where he spent 30 years and eventually served as senior vice president and director of systems and electronic publishing. His work took him from Iowa to Massachusetts, but he always carried a bit of the Midwest with him.
John's faith was an important part of his life. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Needham, where he served for many years on the church council and contributed thoughtfully to the life of the congregation.
Growing up, John worked on the family farm and took on odd jobs, including setting bowling pins by hand for a dime an hour. He loved baseball and once pitched a perfect no-hitter for the Northwest Iowa All Star Team in 1953, a memory he proudly shared for years.
For more than four decades, John was a member of Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, where he found joy in both the game of golf and the friendships made around it. He was also a keen bridge player, known for his focus, wit, and sense of fair play. John also served on the Board of Directors.
More than anything, John cherished time with his family. He will be missed deeply by his loving son, Paul; daughter-in-law, Roseanna; and granddaughter, Angela Mae—along with many relatives and dear friends in Iowa and Massachusetts.
John lived life with quiet confidence, curiosity, and kindness. His laughter, stories, and steady presence will stay in our hearts always.
