Jim Hopkins, 88, of Le Mars died peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the Methodist Church of Le Mars.  Pastor Jason Larson will officiate.  Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa.  Visitation with the family present will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church.  Arrangements are with the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com.

Jimmy Nelson Hopkins was born in Whiting, Iowa on December 28, 1936, to Jimmie and Annabel (Wickland) Hopkins. He grew up in Whiting, graduating from high school in 1954. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. While in college he met the love of his life, Julie Horner. They were married in Storm Lake on August 16, 1958, and were blessed with two sons, Steve in 1960, and Paul in 1963.

Jim obtained his pharmacist license in 1961 and maintained that license for more than 50 years. He began his career at Estherville Drug before moving to Le Mars to found Hopkins Drug, which was later known as Family Pharmacy.

Deeply involved in his community, Jim was an Abu Bekr Shrine, past master of the Masonic Lodge #447, and a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Sertoma, and the Iowa Pharmacy Association. He was a longtime member of the Methodist Church of Le Mars.

Jim loved the Hawkeyes, Potato Lake, and slipping "people food" to any dog nearby. He loved all animals, but dogs and horses were his kindred spirits. He made friends everywhere he went, and always had a joke or a witty comment to share. He loved art, poetry, and history, and he enjoyed the great outdoors in every season. He especially enjoyed organizing and hosting annual ski trips to Telemark for friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Julie; sons Steve (Susan) and Paul (Christie); grandchildren Chris (Kathryn) Glanzer, Brittany (Tim) Bungert, Alex (Krystina) Hopkins, and Jenny Hopkins; and great-grandchildren Anna (Lewis) Furmenger, Paul Glanzer, Ben Bungert, Elizabeth Bungert, Anna Bungert, and Ellis Hopkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pat and brother-in-law Jerry Volkert, and great-grandson Darren Glanzer.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Bavarian Meadows and Happy Siesta for the compassion and care they provided during the final months of Jim's life.
