She was born July 23, 1952, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Jay and Jill (Galbrecht) Brouwer. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hinton, Iowa.
Jan met the love of her life, Dennis Heimgartner, in study hall during her sophomore year at Hinton Community School. The high school sweethearts were married December 19, 1970. They lived in Leeds, Iowa, prior to moving to the Heimgartner family farm in Hinton, Iowa, in 1979. The couple welcomed a son June 30, 1971, and a daughter July 25, 1973.
The dedicated wife and mother helped around the farm and worked for her mother's real estate company before following her dreams to help shape and nurture young minds. She received her teaching degree from Westmar University and joined Hinton Community School in 1986 as a remedial reading teacher. She spent most of her career as a first-grade teacher. She later earned a master's degree from Wayne State College. She retired in 2013.
Passionate and devoted to her faith, Jan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday school and vacation bible school teacher; assisted Dennis with the finance board; served on the cemetery committee; and was a forever faithful volunteer and friend to everyone in good and bad times.
Jan cherished her family, which included her husband, Dennis of Hinton, Iowa; her son, Jeffrey Heimgartner and his wife Jasmine of Lincoln, Nebr.; daughter Melissa Heimgartner and her partner Chad Guzinski of Ashland, Nebr.; two grandsons, Jayden and Jonah Heimgartner of Lincoln, Nebr.; sister-in-law Diane (Heimgartner) Hartman and her husband Cal of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister-in-law Glenda Heimgartner of Le Mars, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay on February 3, 2014, and Jill on April 2, 2020; and parents-in-law, Elroy Heimgartner on January 23, 2009, and Maycele Heimgartner on November 22, 2019.
Memorials may be directed to the Hinton Elementary School.
