Gary Nussbaum was born in Le Mars, IA on April 1, 1948, to Conrad "Coonie" and Viola "Ole" (Fiedler) Nussbaum. As a young man Gary farmed with his dad and his twin brother Roger. Soon after graduating from Le Mars Community Schools in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army. Proud of his Army service as an infantryman, Gary achieved the rank of Sargent E5 and was honorably discharged in 1972.
Following his service, he was employed building Harvestore Silos and working at Simonsen's Ag Products. After earning a degree in carpentry at NITC in Sheldon, IA, he worked for Bunjes Construction. Gary later sold seed corn and beans for Wilson Seeds and Dr. Thompsons Feed Mineral Supplement before having a career spanning 26 years with the United States Postal Service in Orange City, IA as a city letter carrier and union representative while also continuing to work on his farm.
In 1974 he married Joyce (Loutsch) Nussbaum and had two sons.
Gary was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Cubs and was excited to see the Cubs finally win a World Series. He also liked his classic cars and tractors, collecting antiques and die cast tractors, relaxing on his farm, watching westerns and comedies and spending time with his family and dogs. Gary was a member of the American Legion Wasmer Post #241 and the National Association of City Letter Carriers Branch 4643.
He will be lovingly remembered by his two sons Justin Nussbaum of Le Mars and Aaron Nussbaum of Omaha and a granddaughter Emmery Nussbaum, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
