Dorothy C. Nipp, 91, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Father Doug Klein will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
Dorothy was born on November 19, 1931, to James L. and Helen P. (Schick) Morris. Her mother died when she was eleven years old and her father remarried Georgiana Rawers. Dorothy grew up and attended school in Dunkirk, Indiana and graduated from high school in 1949. She was employed as a young woman in Muncie and Dunkirk. In 1952, she moved to Southern California and was employed in the Compton area until 1958 when she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, CA. As a religious sister Dorothy received her BA and teacher's credential and later received a MA in Religious Education. She taught and was an administrator in elementary schools in Southern and Northern California and in Lubbock, Texas for 12 years. From 1973 to 1980, Sr. Dorothy Morris, CSJ, was a parish sister and was a Director of Religious Education in Colorado, California and Texas. In 1980 she saw a need to help minister with the divorced and separated Catholics and was instrumental in beginning many support groups, directed various programs and conferences in the Orange and Los Angeles dioceses. She continued this ministry and furthered her ministry to include the sick in hospitals and to the widowed. Dorothy left the religious life in 1997 after 40 years of service.
In September of 1998, Dorothy married Donald J. Nipp. She enjoyed her retirement years by being involved in parish life, overseas travel, visiting family and friends in the United States and by spending the winter months at Desert Hot Springs and Riverside, CA. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill until its closing when she joined All Saints Catholic Parish-St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. While in California, she was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Glenn Avon. Dorothy wrote two books, The Golden Years: Living Them Fully and Creatively and Nun Story: Sense and Nunsense. Dorothy did book signings and gave talks to various groups for several years.
Dorothy is survived by her stepson, Patrick J. Nipp; grandson, Joshua (Amanda) Nipp and their three children of Riverside, CA; sister-in-law, Colleen (Stuart) Smith of Warsaw, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Nipp; her parents; her stepmother; a sister, Sr. Margaret Morris of the Precious Blood Congregation of Dayton, OH.
