Dennis was born in Le Mars, Iowa, on February 28, 1950, to Elroy and Maycele (Lang) Heimgartner. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, Iowa. Dennis attended school at Hinton Community School, where he met the love of his life, Jan Brouwer, in study hall during his senior year.
Shortly after graduating in 1968, Dennis worked for Ozark Airlines in Chicago until he moved back to Iowa in 1969 to marry his high school sweetheart, Jan, on December 19, 1970, at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Leeds, Iowa, and Dennis became a car salesman in 1973. He sold cars for Chrysler Plymouth, Wilson Motors, Charlie Zook Dodge and Hoak Cadillac Oldsmobile.
In 1979, Dennis stopped selling cars, and the couple moved to the Heimgartner family farm in rural Hinton. Early on in Dennis's farming career, he also worked full-time as a welding foreman for Schaeff NAMCO in Sioux City. The couple welcomed a son in 1971, and a daughter in 1973.
Passionate and devoted to their faith, Dennis and Jan were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Jan was a Sunday school and vacation bible schoolteacher. Dennis served on the finance board and the cemetery committee. He was a forever faithful volunteer and friend to everyone in both good and bad times.
Dennis was proud of his family, which included his wife, Jan, of Hinton, Iowa; his son, Jeffrey Heimgartner, and his wife, Jasmine, of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Melissa Heimgartner, also of Lincoln; two grandsons, Jayden and Jonah Heimgartner of Lincoln; sister Diane (Heimgartner) Hartman and her husband Cal of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister Glenda Heimgartner of Le Mars, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan, on August 19, 2021, and by his parents, Elroy on January 23, 2009, and Maycele on November 22, 2019.
