Cora Jean Mackey, 67, of Akron, Iowa, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the First Baptist Church in Akron, Iowa. Rev. Michael Moos will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Cora Jean Mackey was born on October 8, 1957, in Amhurst, Ohio, the daughter of Lyle and Hazel (McCormick) Mason. The family lived in Winner, South Dakota where Cora attended country school. In 1966, they moved to North Sioux City, South Dakota and she attended grade school at Mc Cook Lake, South Dakota and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1976.
On June 28, 1980, Cora and Douglas Edward Mackey were united in marriage in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home in Hubbard, Nebraska.
In early years, Cora spent time trucking with Doug throughout the United States. Later she worked as a banquet hostess and bartender at the Marina Inn and the Convention Center in South Sioux City, Nebraska. In 1997, they moved to Akron, Iowa. Most recently she worked in the housekeeping department at the Akron Care Center. Doug passed away on January 31, 2015.
Cora was a devoted member of the 1st Baptist Church in Akron, Iowa. She served as church Treasurer while Doug served as a Deacon. She enjoyed planting and gardening and cared for her father in his final years.
She will be greatly missed by a son, Jedediah (Lora) Mackey and their daughter, Chloe Sanow of Le Mars, IA; a son, Mason Mackey of Akron, IA; a step-daughter, Leanna Collins of Castana, IA, and her children: Douglas Mackey, Mariah Collins, Samuel Collins, and Zacheriah Collins; siblings, Burt (Beverly) Mason of Richland, SD, Kay Kramer of Hawarden, IA, Scott Mason of N. Sioux City, SD, Jeff (Becky) Mason of Elk Point, SD, Ival Haas of Massachusetts and Susan (Clayton) Merryman of N. Sioux City, SD; brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve (Teri) Mackey of Sioux City, IA, Ron Mackey of Arizona and Cindy (Jerry) Osterholt of Onawa, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doug; a grandson, Austin Collins; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Francis and Franny Mackey; brothers-in-law, Jim Mackey and Peter Kramer; sisters-in-law, Kathy Mackey, Julie Moriston and Sandi Mackey.
