Alberta Jean Smith, 91, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Rev. Elizabeth Odor of the Merrill Melbourne United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation with the family present will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the service on Wednesday.
Alberta Jean Smith was born on July 19, 1932, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Warren and Nadine (Owen) Mullnix. She was raised in the Williamsburg area where she graduated from high school in 1950.. Following high school, Alberta began waitressing at a local restaurant. It was there that she met Milo Palmer Smith, Jr. Alberta and Milo were united in marriage on October 4, 1952.
Along with caring for her family, Alberta worked as the office manager for the Iowa County Engineer's Office. She held this position for twenty-eight years. Milo passed away on June 2, 1999. Alberta moved to Le Mars, Iowa in 2004. She attended the Merrill Melbourne United Methodist Church while living in Le Mars.
Alberta enjoyed sewing and quilting, golfing and travel. She had an adventuresome spirit and liked watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities.
Grateful to have shared her life are her sons and their wives, Allan and Peggy Smith of rural Merrill, Iowa and Terry and Carol Smith of Carlsbad, CA; grandchildren, Nate (Yvonne Buchheit) Smith of Columbia, MO, Janora (Brad) Korver of Alton, IA, Ryan (fiance, Jessica Leyva) Smith of Carlsbad, CA and Dana (Jess) Eimen of Maui, HI; great-grandchildren, Autumn Leigh, Emma Jean, Cassidy Ellen and Dustin Jay Korver; a sister-in-law, Leslie Mullnix of Mt. Auburn, IA; a step-sister, Sylvia Ferguson of Tipton, IA; and her neighbors and good friends Mary Bauer and Tricia Ernst.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Milo P. Smith; a brother, Leonard Mullnix; her stepfather Cal Williams, and a step-brother, Wayne Williams.
Memorials can be directed to St. Croix Hospice or Merrill Melbourne United Methodist Church.
The family wishes to thank all the staff at the Good Samaritan Society and the St. Croix Hospice personnel who took such wonderful care of Alberta.
