Obituary for William Joseph "Bill" Engel

Bill Engel, 79, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2018 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 4-8 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Monday.

William Joseph Engel was born on May 18, 1939 in Ponca, Nebraska, the son of Vincent and Arlene (Gilmer) Engel. He attended grade schools in South Sioux City, Nebraska, Hot Springs, South Dakota and Le Mars, Iowa. He graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars in 1957. Bill then attended Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana and Westmar College in Le Mars.

On October 20, 1960, Bill and Dixie Lee Wheeler were united in marriage at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. They were blessed with four children, Bradley, Pamela, Mark and Melissa. Bill spent most of his life in sales either selling apparel for K-Products in Orange City, Iowa or selling cars at several car dealers which he always enjoyed so much. After his retirement in 2011, he delivered cars throughout the area for Jensen Motors.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 57 years, Dixie Engel of Le Mars, IA; his children, Bradley and Dee Dee Engel of Sioux City, IA, Pamela and Rick Schiltz of Platte City, MO, Mark Engel of Hull, IA and Melissa and Kelly Couch of Le Mars, IA; 11 grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn and Mark Sickman of La Jolla, CA and JoAnn and Pat Nelson of Phoenix, AZ; brothers, Jim and Donna Engel, Ken and Nancy Engel and Doug and Lisa Engel all of Le Mars, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Jess and Laura Wheeler; a son-in-law, Christopher McGee; and grandson, Brandon Engel.

A special thank you to Hospice, the staff of Plymouth Manor and Michelle Butcher for the care you gave Bill and the help you gave to his family. Your kindness and thoughtfulness will not be forgotten.
