Obituary for Harold Henry Harms

Harold Henry  Harms
Harold H. Harms, 90, of Brunsville, Iowa passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, Iowa. Rev. Shawn Brooks will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery in Brunsville with military honors conducted by Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724. Visitation will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Saturday.

Harold Henry Harms was born on December 12, 1926 in Brunsville, Iowa, the son of Henry J. and Katherine M. (Johlfs) Harms. He graduated from Le Mars Community High School in May of 1944. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the United States Navy where he attained the rank of signalman third class. After being honorably discharged in July 1946, he attended the University of South Dakota. He then attended the University of Iowa and graduated in May of 1950.

On May 9, 1952, Harold and Deloris Marie Janssen were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran in Craig, Iowa. They made their home in Brunsville and were blessed with six children: Paul, Beth, Carol, Richard, David and Steven.

Harold worked at First State Bank, now Iowa Prairie Bank, for 67 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville. He was city clerk of Brunsville for many years. Harold was active in the Le Mars Lions Club and Theta XI fraternity. He also served on the Community Bankers of Iowa Board of Directors and belonged to various other banking organizations. Harold was a founding members of the Heeren-McHale-Wilkens American Legion Post #724 in Brunsville where he belonged for 60 years.

Harold fulfilled a lifelong dream by building Prairie Rose Golf Club in 1992. He enjoyed many days playing golf and checking on the greens.

Harold will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Deloris; his children and their families; a daughter-in-law, Jan Harms of Spirit Lake, Iowa and her children, Ellen (Pablo) Morocho, Sam and Paulina of Washington, DC, Matthew Harms of Emmetsburg, IA, Laura (Alex) Pompa Hudson of Omaha, NE; a daughter and her family, Beth (Tim) Rollinger of Brunsville, Iowa, Joseph (Kara) Rollinger, Kaiden and Grifynn of Le Mars, Jill Rollinger of Des Moines, Iowa, Amy Rollinger of Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter and her family, Carol (Clark) Schmitz of Brunsville, Iowa, Samantha Schmitz (husband Jacob Lehmann), Talan, Grace and Knox; a son, Richard (Nancy) Harms of Brunsville, Iowa, a son and his family, Steven (Ann) Harms Le Mars, Iowa, Kailan Harms of Chicago, IL Brendan Harms, Ames, IA.


He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; two sons, Paul 1994, David 1979; three sisters and their spouses, Theresa and Gordon Mennen, Harriette and Robert Nedell, Phyllis and Dr. Max Swancutt; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Janssen.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made Hospice of Siouxland, St. Peter Lutheran Church of Brunsville, Heeren-McHale-Wilkens American Legion Post #724, or Four Seasons Garden Club.
