Obituary for Frank Valequette Curry

Frank V. Curry, 89, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. Rev. Dr. Okitakoyi Michel Lundula will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Saturday.

Frank Valequette Curry was born on March 20, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa, one of nine children born to Charles A. and Florrie (Hedge) Curry. He attended Central High School in Sioux City prior to enlisting in the United States Navy. He served as a Hospital Corpsman on a Naval hospital ship during both WWII and the Korean War prior to earning his honorable discharge. After his military service, Frank earned his bachelor’s degree at Morningside College in Sioux City. He later earned his master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California. He achieved his special education administrative credentials attending graduate school at Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University. Professionally, he worked as the Director of Physical Therapy at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Physical Therapist at Rhodes Elementary School (Illinois), Director of Special Education in Peotone, Illinois; Marshalltown, Iowa; and Romulus, Michigan. Frank rediscovered his love for working with individual students with disabilities, choosing to end his professional life as a Physical Therapist for an intermediate school district in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan.

On August 16, 1950, Frank and Beverly Weidert were united in marriage at Grace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Sioux City, Iowa.

Following his move back to Iowa, Frank attended the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. He was previously a member of the Geneva Presbyterian Church while living in Canton, Michigan. He was a very active member of the church; he co-led with his wife church studies for over 20 years, participated in the church choir and served as a church elder and church deacon. Frank was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Optimist Club.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Katherine Derry of Rosenberg, TX; a son, David Curry of Le Mars, IA; grandsons, Adam and Ross Curry of Le Mars, IA; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; daughter-in-law, Lorrie Curry; brothers and sisters, Fern Hobbs, Lavina Davitt, Pauline Ortiz, Charlotte Kleber, Elmer Curry, Howard Curry, George Curry and Vernon Curry; infant siblings; nieces and nephews.
