Obituary for Larry Thomas "Butch" Woll

Larry Thomas "Butch"  Woll
Larry “Butch” Woll, 75, of Le Mars passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Father Kevin Richter and Father Mauro Sanchez will con-celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at St. Joseph Church. The family will be present at 4:00 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Thursday.

Lawrence Thomas Woll was born on August 13, 1941 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Dolores (Hoffmann) Woll. He graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1959. Following high school, Larry attended mechanics school in Kansas City. In 1962, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in various bases throughout the United States and taught jet engine maintenance at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.

On November 29, 1969, Larry and Jeanne Ruden were united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. In 1970, Larry and Jeanne returned to Le Mars where Larry transferred to the 185th Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City. He served at the 185th ANG until 1974 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at El Toro Marine Base in California. Larry and Jeanne returned to Le Mars in 1976 following his discharge from the Marines. He concluded his military career at the 185th ANG having attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Along with his military service, Larry was the manager at Le Mars Super Wash for 20 years.

Larry was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish-St. Joseph Church in Le Mars, participated in adoration and served on the Gehlen Catholic School Board. He was also a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion where he assisted with military honors and belonged to the Vietnam Veterans Last Man’s Club. Larry’s memberships included the Knights of Columbus and the Le Mars Eagles Club. In his spare time, Larry enjoyed yardwork and gardening, fishing and working on his Lionel model train. He always had a clever joke and loved to tease his grandchildren, which he adored.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Jeanne Woll of Le Mars, IA; a son, Tom Woll and his wife, Donna of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Scott, Matt, Jennifer and Wesley, a son, Chuck “Charlie” Woll of Sioux City, IA, and his son, Charlie; four brothers, Paul (Lois) Woll of Worthington, MN, Denny (Phyllis) Woll of Le Mars, IA, Ed (Alice) Woll of Omaha, NE and Mark (Robynne) Woll of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law, Cy Ahlers of Le Mars, IA, Erma Bush of Cleghorn, IA, Mary Ann Mousel, Bonnie Ruden and Lorraine Ruden all of Le Mars, IA; brothers-in-law, Eldon (Mildred) Ruden of Le Mars, IA and Tom (Marva) Ruden of East Alton, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Floyd Hall; twin sister, Lea Woll; mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Mary Ruden; sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Bernie Madsen, LeRoy Mousel, Melvin VonArb, Joseph “Joe” Ruden, Ray Ruden, Leland Bush, Walter Ruden USN, Harold and Gracie Ruden, Silvius and Margie Ruden.

Memorials may be directed to All Saints Catholic Parish –St. Joseph Church Building Fund or Gehlen Catholic Schools.
