D. JoAnn Simons, 80, of Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. Rev. Ron Rice will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service.
Dorothy JoAnn Simons was born on June 21, 1936 in Marcus, Iowa, the daughter of Homer and Edna (Brown) Weimer. She attended Marcus High School, graduating in 1954. Following high school, JoAnn took a position with Farmers State Bank in Marcus.
On April 19, 1958, JoAnn and Marvin Simons were united in marriage at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. JoAnn remained in Marcus while Marv served in the military. He returned in 1960 and the couple lived in Marcus for two years before moving to the farm south of Marcus.
JoAnn was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and vegetable gardening. She rarely missed her son’s sporting events and that carried on to her grandchildren’s activities. JoAnn sang with a local group at holidays and special events. She was humble, honest and always gave a straight answer.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Marv Simons of Marcus, IA; a son and his wife, Rick and Brenda Simons of Marcus, IA; a daughter, Patricia JoAnn Simons of Sgt. Bluff, IA; grandchildren, Brittany and her husband Jared Schknecht of Sutherland, IA and Ryan Simons and his special friend, Kayla Anderson of Marcus, IA; great-grandchildren, Brec Schknecht and Kaysen Simons; a brother and his wife, Jerry and Judy Weimer of Sioux City, IA; a brother-in-law, Conley Anderson of Cherokee, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Edna Weimer; an infant sister, Patricia; a sister, Carol Anderson; and her father and mother-in-law, Donald and Martha Simons.
