Obituary for Gerald Dean Schweitzberger

Gerald Dean Schweitzberger, 64, of Kingsley, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the Kingsley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Memorial Service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Kingsley United Methodist Church. Rev. Cindy Morrison and Rev. Don Morrison will officiate. Burial with military honors by Nash American Legion Post #140 will take place at the Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be Marv Flewelling, Harlan Schmidt, Dale Gernhart, Burryl Campbell, Jeff Clark and Norman Thompson.

Gerald Dean Schweitzberger was born on January 9, 1952 in Le Mars, Iowa to Harold Dean and Betsy Belle (Dennler) Schweitzberger. He graduated from Kingsley High School in 1970. On September 5, 1973, Gerald enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served in Germany as a forward observer with the 3rd Armored Division, earning the rank of E-4. After earning an Honorable Discharge on March 28, 1975, Gerald moved to Alaska and worked on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Following his stay in Alaska, Gerald began a career in the trucking industry. He trucked with his father and brothers first. He then took a position with Decker Truck Lines as an over the road driver. Gerald earned the One Million Mile Safe Driving Award not only once, but twice.

Gerald was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church and Nash Post #140 of the American Legion. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and collecting Harley Davidson and Elvis memorabilia. Gerald was never afraid of hard work and had a passion for helping others before taking care of himself.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Amy (William) Beach of Nemo, SD, Adam Whitehill of New Berlin, WI, Heath (Jen) Schweitzberger of Sioux City, IA and Jerrod Schweitzberger of Kingsley, IA; two grandchildren, Lucy and Zollie Schweitzberger; his mother, Betsy Schweitzberger of Kingsley, IA; brothers, Ronald (Vicki) Schweitzberger of Kingsley, IA, Steven (Mary) Schweitzberger of Sioux Falls, SD, Billy (Leslie Arndt) Schweitzberger of Kingsley, IA and Richard Schweitzberger of Kingsley, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Denny J. Schweitzberger.

Memorials may be directed to Nash American Legion Post #140 in Kingsley.
