Obituary for Robert Bernard Hinkhouse

Robert Bernard  Hinkhouse
Robert B. “Bob” Hinkhouse, 91, of Pierson, Iowa, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. . Funeral services will take place 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, Iowa. Rev. Wayne Pfannkuch will officiate. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Pierson. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Johnson – Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Friday.

Robert Bernard Hinkhouse was born on June 1, 1924 on a farm near Pierson, Iowa, one of five children of Willie and Nellie (Williams) Hinkhouse. He attended school at Pierson, graduating in 1941. Bob served in the Navy from September 24, 1943 to April 17, 1946. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier CVE-55 Casablanca and served in the Pacific Theatre as 2nd class petty officer aviation machinist. On January 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Bette Herbold. The couple farmed southwest of Pierson for 40 years. He also co-owned the Gulf Fertilizer plant in Pierson with his brother-in-law James Irwin. In 1970 the fertilizer plant was leased and in 1973 sold to the Pierson Elevator while Bob worked another 10 years for the Co-op.

Bob was a long time member of Salem Lutheran Church in rural Correctionville, Iowa. He served on the Pierson City Council for 20 years. Bob enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. His family enjoyed many fun days of swimming, boating and fishing at their Okoboji, Iowa lake home. His lifelong hobby was woodworking. Many people in Pierson and the surrounding area could count on Bob to build a special project for them or complete repair work on a damaged object, restoring it to like new condition. For several years Bob built John Deere clocks for friends and also sold them to Dick Ahlers Clocks in Sioux City, Iowa. He also built items for Salem Lutheran Church and the Pierson Community Center.

Survivors include one son, Bill Hinkhouse and his wife Kay of Larchwood, Iowa; two daughters, Vicki Stribley and her husband Steve of Okoboji, Iowa and Judy Krier and her husband Rick of Sioux City, Iowa; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanne Denis of Green Bay, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Jackie Herbold and Marvel Hinkhouse of Pierson, Iowa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bette; three brothers; Ronald “Heinie”, Duane “Jim” and Roger “Sam” Hinkhouse.
