Obituary for Leo J. Arens

Leo J.  Arens
Leo J. Arens, 54, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at his home on Thursday, June 25, 2015. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at All Saints Catholic Parish-St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Jerome Cosgrove and Father Paul Eisele will concelebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. A rosary is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with a scriptural prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Wednesday. Honorary Pallbearer will be Jim Foster. Pallbearers will be Mark and Maxine Gaul, Lee Hirst, Kirk Ulveling, Jerry Gritzmaker, Trace Keane and Pat Krull.

Leo John Arens was born on October 29, 1960 in Le Mars, Iowa the son of Jim J. and Mary Ann (Dreckman) Arens. At the age of 9, Leo was diagnosed with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. He graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1979 and earned his college degree from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa in 1984. His first job was with Penn Corp in as an insurance agent. Leo then took a position with PTT (Long Lines) and began his career in telemarketing. He later worked for PTI and MCI (World Com). His last occupation was with Premier Bank Card. He was forced to retire after he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease in 2010.

Leo was an easy going, free spirited person who made friends easily. His family and friends admired his positive outlook and quick wit. He was an avid fan of NASCAR, the Cincinnati Reds and was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed playing with his nephews, fishing, music concerts, and anyone with a cold beer.

He will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Mary Ann Arens of Le Mars, IA; brothers Leonard of Omaha, Ne and Ed of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Annie Arens Walker and her husband Ed of Ellettsville, IN and their children, Dylan of Ellettsville, IN, Whitney of Pensacola, FL, Katie of Spencer, IN and Stephen of Bloomfield, IN; a sister, Amy Arens of Gilbert, AZ and her son Noah Jacques of Gilbert, AZ; family friend and Godmother, Kay Grunden of Remsen, IA; aunts and uncles, Esther (Mrs. Vern) Bunkers of Remsen, IA; Father Phil Dreckman, SJ of Milwaukee, WI, Eny and Gene Pottebaum of Rock Rapids, IA, Larry and Diane Dreckman of Le Mars, IA, Doris (Mrs. Lou) Wurth of Remsen, IA and Jane and Lee Konz of Remsen, IA; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jim and Molly (Kennedy) Arens and Leo and Anna (Holzman) Dreckman; father, Jim J. Arens on January 3, 2004; an infant sister, Mary; an aunt, Sister Peggy Margaret Jean Dreckman, OSH; aunts and uncles, Oswald and Doris Arens, Ken and Elvira Arens, Valeria and Woody Alesch, Phyllis and Stanley Englert, Helen and Ed Jaminet, Mary C. and Gene Loutsch, Esther and Len Konz, Vern Bunkers, Lou Wurth; and several cousins.

Memorials may be directed to Siouxland Dialysis Center, Gehlen Catholic Schools or Hospice of Siouxland.
