Richard M. Kilgore, 81, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away with his loving wife by his side on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday June 19, 2015 at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
Richard Montgomery Kilgore was born April 20, 1934 in Minneapolis, MN to David and Grace (Voller) Kilgore. He graduated from West High in Minneapolis. He then served in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Richard was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
On November 3, 1956 he married the love of his life, Donna Marie Shortley, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. They remained together for 58 years. Richard graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then followed up with graduate studies at the University of South Dakota where he obtained a Master of Arts degree.
In the early 60’s the family moved to the Siouxland Area. Richard had a home built in the Morningside district of town in 1963. They lived in the home for more than 50 years.
Dick took a teaching position with the Sioux City Community School District where he taught for 30 years before retiring in 1992. He also dedicated time and effort into school athletics, coaching numerous sports over the years, including football, wrestling and girl’s track. Sports was a true passion of his. If he couldn’t play it, teach it or coach it, he watched it. Golf for him was lifelong being blessed with the all illusive Hole-in-One. In retirement Dick and Donna loved their gambling trips to Las Vegas.
Richard is survived by his brother Daniel of Sacramento, CA; his loving wife, Donna who resides at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, IA; son, Jeffrey who resides somewhere in the Gold fields of Northern California; and daughter, Suzanne Wells of Arkansas Pass, TX.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents and brother David. He will be sorely missed, may he rest in peace.
