Obituary for Mark Anthony Koopman

Mark A. Koopman, 83, of Le Mars passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2015 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Kevin Richter will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Monday. Pallbearers will be Bill Koopman, Paul Schnepf, Kevin Langel, Tom Langel, Randy Anthony and Leon Goerdt.

Mark Anthony Koopman was born on October 18, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa, one of eight children born to Aloysius and Kathryn (Freking) Koopman. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1949.

On August 12, 1952, Mark and Bernice Anthony were united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Mark was inducted into the United States Army on April 9, 1953. He served during the Korean War as a radio operator and radar chief. He earned his honorable discharge on April 8, 1955.

After the war, Mark and Bernice began farming near Le Mars. He also operated a feed grinder and worked as a carpenter with Fred Harms. In 1967, Mark began his career with Iowa Public Service as a Hydraulic Lineman. He retired in 1991.

Mark was a member of St. James Catholic Church where he was a collection counter for 40 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion and a past member of the Le Mars Eagles Club. In his spare-time he enjoyed woodworking, hunting, golfing and playing cards. Some of his favorite times were taking trips to area lakes with his family. He and Bernice traveled throughout the United States and to Europe. Mark was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan and rarely missed one of his children’s and grandchildren’s ball games. He was a “Jack of all trades” and his family could always count on him to fix something.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Bernice of Le Mars, IA; children, Doug Koopman and Steph Quah-Koopman of Manila, Philippines, Kim and Darrell Hargens of Le Mars, IA, Denny and Shelley Koopman of Alta, IA, Keith Koopman and special friend Deb Swift of Le Mars, IA and Scott and Marla Koopman of Le Mars, IA; grandchildren, Tyler (Kayla), Lexi, Rachel, Zach, Kersey, Nicole, Matt, Ky, Kelsey (Aaron); a great-granddaughter, Claire; sisters-in-law, Darlene Koopman, Marlys Koopman, Helen Anthony, Joanne Anthony and Vonnie Anthony all of Le Mars, IA, and Helen Langel of Norfolk, NE; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Kelly Koopman; brothers and sisters, Esther (Elmer) Schnepf, Harriet (Al) Goerdt, Delbert (Phyllis) Koopman, Marcel Koopman, Elwood “Bud” Koopman, Les Koopman, and Wayne (Sylvia) Koopman.
