Obituary for Edwin Carl Ellensohn

Edwin Carl  Ellensohn
Edwin C. Ellensohn, 83, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 13, 2015 at All Saints Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Father Kevin Richter will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. The family will be present from 4-8 p.m. with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Monday. Pallbearers will Andrew, Matthew, Neil, Dominic, Adam and Elijah Ellensohn.

Edwin Carl Ellensohn was born on November 24, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Eugene and Mary (Burkard) Ellensohn. He attended country school near his home and later graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Navy on March 27, 1951. He served in San Diego and earned his honorable discharge on March 16, 1955.

Ed returned to Le Mars and married Suzanne Hubert on February 11, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. They made their first home on a farm near Neptune, Iowa. Ed was a farmer through and through. Along with raising crops, he raised purebred hogs for 40 years. Planting and harvest were his favorite times of the year. In 1964, Ed and Suzanne moved to the home place east of Le Mars. Upon retirement, they moved to Le Mars in 2008.

Ed was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion where he played cards with his friends. He enjoyed vacationing at Arnold’s Park and attended his Navy reunions 17 years in a row. Above all, Ed’s family and faith were the center of his life. He was a devoted and proud husband, parent and grandparent.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne of Le Mars; Mark and Nancy Ellensohn of Le Mars, IA, Beth and Tim Sutton of Wagner, OK, Allen Ellensohn of Le Mars, IA, Joel Ellensohn and Denise Gollhofer of Le Mars, IA, Quentin Ellensohn of Le Mars, IA, Joan Ellensohn-Conley of Le Mars, IA, Ann Pry of Le Mars, IA, Julia and Tony EllensohnColon of Sioux Falls, SD, Eric and Nicki Ellensohn of Le Mars, IA and Paul and Robin Ellensohn of Le Mars, IA; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Joan Burns of Sioux Falls, SD and Shirley Ellensohn of Le Mars, IA; brother and sister-in-law, John and Maurine Hubert of Blencoe, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Angela Ellensohn; brother, Donald Ellensohn; brother-in-law, Tom Burns; and brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Rose Marie Marley.
