Obituary for Marvin E. DeVos

Marvin E.  DeVos
Marvin E. DeVos, 73, of Le Mars, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow and Rev. Peter Rosenkvist will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday.

Marvin Eugene DeVos was born on March 5, 1942 in Sioux Center, Iowa, one of six children born to Joe and Alice (Addink) DeVos. He attended grade school and high school in Sioux Center. On July 28, 1961, Marvin and Geneva Harms were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars, Iowa. They made their home in Le Mars. Marv took a position with his father-in-law in the construction business. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1965.

Upon returning from the service, Marv started a career with Kay Dee Feed and Nutra-Flo Fertilizer in Sioux City, Iowa. Along with his daily work in sales, Marv was instrumental in coordinating the company’s hunting and fishing trips. He is currently employed with Kay-Flo and was on a company ice fishing trip in Canada when he became ill.

Marv became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars in 1961. He was also a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion and the Eagles Club. From 1961 to 1965, Marv served on the Le Mars Fire Department. He was active in Pheasants Forever and served on various committees. He had a passion for fishing and hunting along with country music. His favorite moments were spent with his grandchildren, followed by weekends at the cabin at Lake Shetek, Minnesota.

Grateful to have shared his life are his wife of 53 years, Geneva DeVos of Le Mars; a daughter, Terri DeVos of Sioux City, IA; two sons and their wives, Steve and Brigett DeVos of Polk City, IA and Dan and Victoria DeVos of Westfield, IA; three grandchildren, Tyler, Emelia and Oakley; three sisters, Jane Den Ouden of Seney, IA, Nupe Jeltema of Orange City, IA and Nel DeGooyer of Maurice, IA; a brother and his wife, Herm and Mert DeVos of Orange City, IA; sister –in-law Dolly DeVos of Sioux Center, IA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie Harms, Jeanie and Randy Jelken, Denny and Patti Harms all of Le Mars, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Scott; brother, Jack, and brothers-in-law, Casey DenOuden, Jim Jeltema and Don DeGooyer.
