Evelyn M. Held, 93, of Hinton, Iowa passed away on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Bickford Senior Living in Sioux City, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the Hinton United Methodist Church. Rev. Kolleen Queener will officiate. Burial will follow at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the church.

Evelyn Marie Madsen was born on February 11, 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marie (Meinert) Madsen. She graduated from East High School in 1940 and furthered her education at Morningside College in Sioux City. After earning a degree in Business Education in 1945, Evelyn took a position in the administrative office at Morningside.

Evelyn and Howard Held were united in marriage at Sioux City, Iowa on April 9, 1950. They made their home on the Held family farm south of Hinton, Iowa. Evelyn began substitute teaching at Central and East High School in Sioux City. In the early 60’s, this turned into a full time position at East High School. Along with teaching, she was active with Howard in the cattle business. Evelyn taught at East High School until her retirement in 1989. Later in their farming years they took fishing trips to Michigan and Canada.

She was a member of Hinton United Methodist Church and participated in United Methodist Women. She took great pride in her family and her home, especially her grandchildren. In earlier years, she modeled clothing for T.S. Martin Department Store. She and Howard attended numerous cattle shows and auctions along with many sporting events. They belonged to the Morningside Alumni Association. Evelyn volunteered with the American Cancer Association. In her spare-time, she enjoyed reading, knitting, playing the piano and singing. She has resided at Bickford Senior Living in Sioux City for the past 18 months.

Grateful to have shared her life is her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kaye Held of Hinton, IA; a granddaughter, Danica Held of Hinton, IA; a grandson, Benjamin Held of Spearfish, SD; sisters-in-law, Verla Madsen of Sioux City, IA, Carole Burr of Cedar Rapids, IA, Roberta Hasek of Sac City, IA, Darlene (Dale) Harris of Sioux Falls, SD and Sherri Held of Cherokee, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard on June 28, 1999; son, Richard on August 9, 2010; a brother, Les Madsen, brothers and sisters-in-law; Richard Burr, Bob Hasek, Joyce and Le Roy Jensen, Hazel and Horace Huff, Lois and Howard Field, Emma and Maurice Talmage, Warren Held, Robert and Charlotte Held.
