Betty C. Kennaley, 88, of Le Mars passed away on Monday, December 15, 2014 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2014 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Richard Reis will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 4:00 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the church.
Betty was born at Mapleton, Iowa on August 10, 1926 to Joseph Leo and Josephine Margaret (Sullivan) Kenaley. At the age of five, her family moved to Plymouth County, Iowa. Betty attended grade school in several schools in Stanton Township and graduated from Le Mars Community Schools in 1943. She took a secretarial course in high school and after graduation she took a job at Terminal Grain in Sioux City. She continued work as a secretary for several companies through the years. When her Dad died in 1962, she moved home to care for her mother and continued as a secretary in Le Mars until her retirement.
Betty sang with the Sweet Adelines ladies barbershop group for several years. She enjoyed taking trips with her mother and sister, and her niece Louise and husband Ed took her to Ireland. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Her family was always very important to her, she thought of all her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She loved nothing better than spending time with family. She loved music and attended all their performances and encouraged them to take part in music and the plays at school.
She is survived by a sister, Bonnie Ruden and a brother Bob (Ruth) Kenaley all of Le Mars, a sister-in-law, Helen Kenaley of Iowa City, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Josephine Kenaley; sisters, Louise Kidd, Rose Krogh, Rita Starzl and Alice Murray; brothers, Gerald and Don; brothers in-law, James Kidd, Allan Murray, Joseph Ruden, Roman Starzl and Don Krogh.
