Ray Kass, 89, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2014 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Father Daniel C. Guenther will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. Visitation will resume at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at the church.
Raymond Alfred Kass was born on January 24, 1925 near Remsen, Iowa, the son of Frank Theodore and Elizabeth (Nacke) Kass. He attended country school near his home and later assisted his family with farming.
On June 22, 1948 Ray and Kathleen Sholly were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Together they farmed south of Le Mars, Iowa until moving to a farm west of Marcus. Later they moved to a farm on highway 3. In November of 1986, Ray and Kathleen retired and moved into Marcus. Kathleen passed away on August 9, 1988. Ray and his brother Greg farmed together for many years.
Ray worked part time as a greens keeper during his retirement. He met Floreine Aggers who also worked at the golf course. They were married on June 10, 2004. They made Marcus their home. Flo passed away on January 26, 2012.
Ray was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. He enjoyed woodworking and crafts and made many things for his home and family. He also played in several card groups along with his family.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Linda Schanus of Ankeny, IA and her son, Louis (Shannon) Schanus, Larry Kass of Sumner, IA and his children, Josh (Amber), Erin, Nate (Alison), Rachel (Jeff) Bach, Ben, Megan and Daniel, Ron and Candy Kass of Sioux City, IA and their children, Corey (Hollie), Justin, Bryan, Breanna and Carrington, Beverly and Larry Fehner of Smithville, MO and their children, Nick, Peter and Kathy; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Georgia Kass of Le Mars, IA; two brothers, Joe (Pat) Kass of Cherokee, IA and Chuck Kass of Sioux City, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two spouses, Kathleen and Floreine; grandson, Garrett; great-grandson, Paul; a daughter-in-law, Sarah; son-in-law, Edward Schanus; sisters, Rita Schutz, Imelda Roethler, and Delores Letsche; brothers, Greg and Leo.
